New Mexico is no stranger to alien urban legends!
But this is one conspiracy theory that has now been proven to be 100% true!
E.T. was found in the desert!
No, no, not the adorable little extraterrestrial from the classic ’80s flick. The Atari game that was released after the movie!
While the Steven Spielberg film soared at the box office, the subsequent video game was a HUGE flop!
Not only did sales suck, the game was regarded as perhaps the worst in history!
So, Atari took thousands of the unsold cartridges and buried them in the New Mexico desert in hopes to erase the past. And in a way, it worked!
The E.T. video game grave became an urban legend and the 8-bit flop was soon forgotten.
Until this week when crews tracked down the site and unearthed Atari’s shame!
200+ people and a documentary film crew were on hand outside of Alamogordo, NM as an excavator dug up thousands of unsold copies!
OMG! We want to hop on our bikes and fly there RIGHT NOW! So cool!
There to witness this historical day in gaming was Howard Scott Warshaw, the original designer of E.T. for Atari!
He admitted how excited he was to see his once criticized creation getting a new chance at glory. He explained:
“I’ve been carrying this thing, the theoretically worst video game of all time, for 30 years now. It was a game that was done in five weeks. It was a very brief development. I did the best that I could, and that’s OK. Something that I did 32 years ago is still creating joy and excitement for people. That├óΓé¼Γäós a tremendously satisfying thing for me now.├óΓé¼┬¥
Unfortunately, NONE of the cartridges found are playable, even though as many as 750,000 are believed to have been found!
But playable or not, the E.T. Atari game will forever have a home in the history books, not just as the worst video game of all time, but one of the coolest myths that turned out to be true!
