Very inneresting debate going on!
Channel 4 in the UK is being criticized for it’s show the Joy of Teen Sex. The channel, which was first to air Skins and Queer as Folk, both controversial for their content, is standing by their program.
Here are some of the complaints:
“The advice given to program participants left little room for exploration, choice, and the right to refuse sexual activity that doesn├óΓé¼Γäót appeal to them.”
And a description of some of the things depicted:
“The series, which began airing at the beginning of the year in the 10 p.m. slot, features a series of young adults being given advice on first-time anal sex, improving lesbian sex, the use of sex toys and information about genital embellishment. It has featured scenes where a 17-year-old girl is given explicit images of intercourse to develop her range of sex skills, a 20-year-old boy is advised how to deal with the pain of anal sex and a young woman is seen having a plaster-cast made of her vagina.”
Now, we do understand the benefit of pushing boundaries, but usually when a certain balance is in order. We agree that because of the such young people being featured that, yes, maybe there should be other alternatives and options presented like mentioned earlier. This does not, however, mean that it should be pulled off the air!
There will always be controversy floating around the idea of sex and sex education. There will never be just one consensus on the subject. If this show offends you, don’t watch it. Talk to your teens, let them know they shouldn’t be watching it either.
Communication is key!
Channel 4 isn’t being silent about the stir, and responded that the show is providing additional education support to things not seen in schools.
They also said:
“We realize that this type of programming will not always appeal to everyone. However, Channel 4 is always willing to listen to the concerns of viewers and interested parties following its broadcasts and we will correspond with the authors of the letter directly about their concerns.”
We are glad that they are handling this gracefully, and not pulling the show on a knee-jerk reaction. The show only started near the beginning of the year, and it seems like many aren’t sure what it could be or even realize if there is a certain potential yet!
All this buzz about it is just going to get people to watch it more, too!
