David Beckham really upset his documentary director while shooting their film… but it actually worked out for the best!
If you tuned into Netflix’s Beckham mini docuseries last fall, you probably remember one hilarious interaction between the former soccer player and his wife Victoria in the first episode.

As a refresher, the fashion designer sat down for what she and director Fisher Stevens believed to be a solo interview. She began talking about how she grew up “working class,” before David popped his head in from behind a door to remind her to “be honest.” After a bit of back and forth, Victoria admitted that her dad owned a luxury Rolls Royce in the ‘80s and drove her to school in it. Of course, that’s a pretty far-fetched vehicle to own if one is truly working class. See the clip (below):

While fans sure got a kick out of David calling out his wife, the director was NOT happy! While at Netflix’s Emmys For Your Consideration at the Tudum Theater in Hollywood on Sunday, the retired athlete broke down exactly why he intruded on his wife’s interview:
“I put the set of headphones on, and all of a sudden I heard my wife go, ‘Well, we’re down to earth.’ And I was like, ‘No, no, no.’ As soon as I heard her say, ‘We’re working class,’ I stuck my head in and I was like, ‘Be honest.’”
HA! We love a partner who isn’t afraid to keep their lover in check! Better to be honest than try to relate to audiences disingenuously!
But because of it, Fisher was “very angry” at the interruption. As he put it, he conducted the solo interview with Victoria so “she could be free to say what she wants.” He recalled:
“I was like, ‘Get him out of here!’”
However, the director then admitted the moment “actually turned out to be brilliant.” He said:
“It worked out. Thank God the cameraman caught David. And then to [editor] Michael [Harte], I did say, ‘We have gold, I think.’”
Literally! The moment got the Netflix series a TON of attention! AND it earned the Beckhams a lucrative commercial deal! David and Victoria later starred in an Uber Eats ad for the Super Bowl, during which the hilarious husband repeated his iconic quip. Not bad!
Thoughts?? Are you glad they left the moment in? Let us know down in the comments!
