Michael C. Hall Talks Playing David Bowie's Former Character In Lazarus -- And The 'Potent Sense Of His Presence' Since His Passing

no title
Obviously, David Bowie is a tough act to follow.
Michael C. Hall is currently starring as Thomas Newton, the same role Bowie so magnificently played in the movie The Man Who Fell To Earth, in the sort-of sequel musical Lazarus.
But the Dexter star is already feeling the heat when it comes to doing right by the music legend!

Talking to reporters, Hall revealed his trepidation about following Bowie’s lead in his performances — especially after the rocker’s death:

“I did feel that a part of my work was to empty myself out and let it move through me. As is often the case when you’re performing, but in this case, all the more so. Since he has passed, there’s probably been a more potent sense of his presence.”

The actor, like so many people, has taken Bowie’s death hard, too.

He’s spent days listening to the artist’s music since the his passing, specifically his final album, Blackstar:

“This is what he gave us so I’ll take it. It’s heavy but soothing. So much of what I love about him characterized what I loved about doing the show [opening night] ├óΓé¼ΓÇ£ it was simultaneously heavy and light as air.”

Hall also revealed that Bowie’s death reminded the actor of when his father died when he was just 11 years old — and after learning of it through “25 or 30” texts, reality quickly sunk in for the performer:

“Some sort of old survival mechanism kicks in. I think it’s about holding on, it’s about mirroring what I see to not be victimized by trauma. To not be a pitiful, fatherless son.”

Intense.
We can only imagine how daunting of a task this has been for the actor to live up to expectations.
