Oh no!
The political unrest in Egypt is not only leaving citizens struggling for survival, but its sheltered animal population as well!
As protests and riots continue to plague the African country’s streets, shelters like the Society for the Protection of Animal Rights in Egypt and the Egyptian Society for Mercy to Animals (ESMA) are losing volunteers and money.
Kristen Stilt of ESMA posted an alarming message on the groups Facebook page, stating:
“Things are getting worse by the hour. Food will run out Tuesday and we are desperate for funds. Our volunteers are acting as courageously as they can but it is extremely dangerous to be on the streets. As soon as they can get out, they will be getting to the zoo, pet shops, etc., where many animals are in distress. We are raising an emergency fund to prepare for all of this.”
These groups may be needed now more than ever because as tourists and Egyptians flee the country, animals are being abandoned and ending up on the streets!
We feel helpless as we watch all of the coverage of the events unfolding in Egypt from thousands of miles away, but not completely helpless.
The Egyptian Society for Mercy to Animals is currently accepting online donations through their website.
