Poor Emily Blunt!
After making an off-hand joke in a recent interview about becoming an American citizen and the first GOP debate, the Into The Woods actress faced some SERIOUS backlash for her comments.
Initially, she stated:

“I thought, ‘This was a terrible mistake. What have I done?'”

Well that’s a total face palm moment.
In fact, it wasn’t the first time the starlet had discussed her mixed emotions on her newly minted U.S. citizenship. Last week, Miz Blunt appeared on Jimmy Kimmel‘s show and relayed:

“It’s so strange and slightly disarming. I’m not sure I’m entirely thrilled about it. People asked me about [it] the whole day. They were like, ‘Oh, it must have been so emotional.’ And I was like, ‘It wasn’t. It was sad! I like being British. It was the most bizarre day.”

That may have been too blunt (sorry had to) for some viewers.
Regardless, the Devil Wears Prada star was obviously kidding and made sure to clarify her statement after fans criticized her.
The brunette beauty appeared on The Today Show Thursday and explained:

“I just, it was so not the intention to hurt anybody or cause any offense, so I really apologize to those I caused offense. It was just an off-hand joke. I think I’ll probably leave the political jokes to late-night or something.”

Aww! See she means well.
During her interview, she concluded:

“My two favorite people in the world are American, my husband and my daughter. It was kind of a special day. Yeah, it was great.”

LOVES it!
The second GOP debate happened last night and we have a feeling that even if John Krasinski‘s wife tuned in, she’ll refrain from commenting about it. Merp.
Be sure ch-ch-check out her full interview (below)!
