What You Should Know Before Rescuing 'Abandoned' Baby Animals

Think you’re gonna save the life of that poor baby animal you’ve found all alone?

Yes, we’ve thought that too — and sadly it doesn’t always work out.

Here are some facts about suburban wildlife you should know before taking the animal out of it’s habitat:

– Mother deer will leave her fawn alone for eight to 10 hours a day while it forages. The fawn can├óΓé¼Γäót keep up with the mother. A fawn├óΓé¼Γäós camouflage and lack of scent keep it pretty well hidden from predators.

– It cost over $125 to rehabilitate a squirrel and over $600 for a deer.

– Rabbit mothers only feed their babies at dawn and dusk. If you think bunnies may be abandoned, sprinkle some flour around their nest and check back later to see whether mom has left footprints.

– Only 10% of wild bunnies survive rehabilitation.

– A lot of people don├óΓé¼Γäót realize that the little birds are on the ground for three days before they really fly. They├óΓé¼Γäóre simply on the ground, fully feathered, with their parents still taking care of them.

– Birds have no since of smell, feel free to put them back in their nest.
