Boo! Florida Family Association Boycotts Degrassi Due To Gay/Transgender Characters

florida family association vs degrassi

NOT cool!

Back in November, we were VERY disappointed to learn that Kodak had pulled its ads from airing during Teen Nick’s popular series, DeGrassi: The Next Generation.

At the time, we heard that Kodak has received a slew of emails from the Florida Family Association (FFA) for supporting a show that “targets teens with gay propaganda and other immoral behavior.” The FFA seems to REALLY have it out for the show because there’s not only gay characters, but a transgender one as well.

We were pleased to learn that Kodak is once again advertising on the show, but NOW the FFA is at it again, and they’re continuing to harass Degrassi show sponsors, including Penguin Viking, Verizon, Colgate, and Hewlett Packard.

Here’s what FFA founder David Canton had to say about his issues with Degrassi:

“How many high schools have a gay first-string quarterback who becomes lovers with someone else on the team? This relationship is extremely unlikely and they shouldn├óΓé¼Γäót open this to dialogue, and I think that it is statistically improbable that you will have a female-to-male transgender who is in love with a lesbian or bisexual in a school setting.”

Here’s what a spokesperson for Teen Nick had to say about the FFA’s impact on advertisers:

├óΓé¼┼ôThere has been no impact and no advertiser has pulled any money off of Teen Nick.”

We continue to thank you for supporting an important cause and helping spread awareness/understanding about gay and transgender issues, Teen Nick!

As for the Florida Family Association, we can only hope that one of these days they’ll come to their senses and realize that they’ve been acting out of ignorance. Such a shame!
