Christmas morning went terribly wrong for one Florida family after a father and son died while attempting a dive.
Darrin Spivey and his son Dillon Sanchez decided to test out some new diving gear they received as gifts on Wednesday, and they headed to the 300-foot Eagle’s Nest Sink.
The area has been described as one of the most difficult caves to dive in the world, and there are even signs upon entering the Chassahowitzka Wildlife Refuge that warn it is not for inexperienced divers.
One sign even reads:
“Cave diving in this area is extremely dangerous – even life threatening! Do not dive unless you are a certified cave diver!!”
Darrin’s fianc├â┬⌐ Holly King grew concerned when the boys didn’t return home after several hours, and when she drove to the cave and noticed their car was still in the parking lot, she called the authorities.
Both bodies were eventually found by rescue divers after about an hour of searching.
Darrin and Dillon both enjoyed diving, however, the 35-year-old was not an experienced cave diver and his son was not certified.
We can’t even begin to imagine how difficult of a time this must be for their family. Our thoughts and prayers go out to them at this time.
