Sesame Street Spells Out Healthy Eating Habits

Sesame Street Spells Out Healthy Eating Habits

Sesame Street program teaches children and families about eating healthy on a budget

Just like Cookie Monster learned that cookies are a “sometime” food, a new initiative launched by the children’s program Sesame Street will teach kids about “anytime” foods.

Food for Thought: Eating Well on a Budget is a program being put together by Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit organization behind the show, and is aimed at 15% of households in the U.S. whose diet doesn’t meet basic nutritional food standards due to financial instability.

The program provides families with an educational outreach kit which includes a video featuring four new Muppets, the “Super foods” ├óΓé¼ΓÇ£ banana, cheese, whole-grain roll and broccoli.

In the video Elmo and friends plus real families try new foods, learn about healthy snacks, and discover the importance of sharing a meal together.

And don’t worry, there will be dancing!

Jeanette Betancourt, vice president of content design for the education, research and outreach department of Sesame Workshop promises:

“All our ‘super foods’ actually sing and dance and encourage the kids and Elmo to try new foods and try new snacks, to eat healthier.”

Boogie’n broccoli? We’re in!

Nothing makes us want to eat our broccoli more than having to chase it down as it tries to dance away to safety.

Since eating healthy seems to be more costly, there also is a budgeting segment with former chef to Oprah Winfrey, Art Smith, who grew up watching the show and says, “It’s amazing to be a part of something that I care so much about”.

For all those bummed out that they may not get a chance check this out, we’ll leave you with some words of wisdom from one of the stars themselves. Elmo says:

“Just remember that you should realize what is a sometimes food, what is an anytime food. It’s very important because that keeps you healthy and strong and Elmo always says, ‘Eat happy, play healthy.'”

Truer words never spoken.
