France Bans Burkas

The ability to wear a burka in public in certain European countries has been in discussions for some time now.

And while Belgium already voted for a total ban of wearing burkas in public, focus has now been put on France.

France will soon become the second European country to outlaw Muslim women from wearing burkas.

France has just voted unanimously in favor of a formal resolution to ban the wear of burkas and will most likely be made into law later this July.

The head of the parliamentary group of President Nicolas Sarkozy‘s UMP party stated:

“This is an important day. We have an important rendezvous with the values of the (French) republic. The resolution is to explain, the law is to decide.”

As for the resolution, it states “radical practices which violate the dignity and equality between men and women, such as the wearing of the full veil, are contrary to the values of the republic.”

And there will be consequences for those who choose to disobey the ban. Women might be faced with paying fines and men forcing them to wear it could spend up to a year in jail if convicted.

Though politicians are insisting the ban of burkas is mainly a security issue, while human rights and Muslim activists claim the decision is violating religious freedoms.
