We knew Frank Oz didn’t have much love for the revitalized version of The Muppets, but the more he talks about it, the more it sounds like he HATES it.
While being interviewed on the red carpet at the 38th annual Saturn Awards, where he was honored for his work in showbiz, the co-creator of The Muppets offered more criticism of the most recent movie.
Before the update even hit theaters, he said he “wasn├óΓé¼Γäót happy with the script.” When asked if he enjoyed Jason Segel’s reboot, the original voice of Fozzie Bear said:
“I am glad others enjoyed it. I thought the script wasn├óΓé¼Γäót forward enough. I thought it was going backwards. And, I thought it was too sweet. Because the Muppets are not sweet. They shouldn├óΓé¼Γäót be cute. It was a little bit too smarmy and cute for me. The Muppets always hated cuteness … If it├óΓé¼Γäós really cute, that├óΓé¼Γäós great ├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥ purely. But, if it gets pejoratively cute, I├óΓé¼Γäóm not crazy about it. I thought the movie was just a bit too sweet.├óΓé¼┬¥
That’s his opinion and he’s A LOT closer to it than any of us, so we can sort of understand where he’s coming from. We may not agree at all, but at least he’s honest.
He continued to be honest when asked about the controversy surrounding Chick-Fil-A and the Jim Henson Company’s decision to part ways with the conservative fast food chain. After saying he had only “heard something about it,” the guy who voiced all of Yoda‘s Jedi wisdom continued:
├óΓé¼┼ôIt├óΓé¼Γäós a business decision by Disney. If that├óΓé¼Γäós the case, it├óΓé¼Γäós not a Muppets decision ├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥ it├óΓé¼Γäós a Disney decision. So, I know nothing about it … Is it good, Chick-fil-A?├óΓé¼┬¥
