Maisie Williams Says Playing Arya Stark Made Her Feel 'Kind Of Ashamed' About Her Body!

Maisie Williams wants to dress up please.

Playing Westeros’ youngest, oftentimes filthiest, assassin wasn’t always great for Maisie Williams’ self-esteem!

The 22-year-old actress opened up to Vogue about how it wasn’t easy playing the not-so-posh Game of Thrones character — who was, throughout a good portion of the show, disguised as a boy — while she was becoming a woman IRL.

In fact, there were times when being confined to such a dirty, comparatively masculine character made the Brit feel downright “ashamed” of her own body. She admitted:

“Even though I was like 16, 18, I was still looking like 12,14. A couple of seasons in the middle, maybe around season 2 or 3, my body started to mature and I started to like, become a woman.”

During this time, Williams said the show went through great lengths to hide her developing body. She recalled:

“Arya was still very much trying to be disguised as a boy, and I had really short hair and they would constantly cover me in dirt and shade my nose so it looked really broad and I look really manly. They’d also put this strap across my chest to flatten any growth that had started… [I] felt horrible for like six months of the year… [and] felt kind of ashamed for a while.”

We bet that was frustrating for the maturing actress — especially when Sophie Turner’s on set serving Winterfell Couture realness every damn week.

Now that she’s said goodbye to the beloved character, Maisie has been able to embrace the feminine side of herself in her wardrobe. And, yes, she’s loving every high fashion second of it.

In the video, which showed her very chicly prepping for Paris Fashion Week, the starlet said:

“So with this new phase of my style it is nice to look more feminine and have a real waistline and embrace the body that I have.”

Show off that feminine frame, girl!

While Arya had one of the most satisfying arcs on the HBO series, Williams previously admitted she wished the writers gave her character a different ending. After the controversial finale aired, the performer said she would’ve preferred if Arya went out of this world the same way she came in: a cold-blooded killer.

She told Entertainment Weekly:

“I just wanted to be on set with Lena [Headey] again, she’s good fun. And I wanted Arya to kill Cersei even if it means [Arya] dies too… Even up to the point when Cersei’s with Jaime I thought [while reading the script], ‘He’s going to whip off his face [and reveal its Arya]’ and they’re both going to die. I thought that’s what Arya’s drive has been.”

Fans probably would’ve loved that ending… but we won’t get into missed GoT finale opportunities here. It’s time we all make like Maisie and move on to chicer things.
