A gay man living in the UK may be deported back to his home country where LGBTQ+ rights “are virtually non-existent” — all because a judge doesn’t believe he’s “truly gay”.
Monsur Ahmed Chowdhury is a 38-year-old man living in the UK. 15 years ago, he was a young man living in the South Asian country of Bangladesh facing persecution over his sexual orientation. He feared for his life, so he fled! But the safety he benefits from in Britain may be coming to a screeching halt.

Metro reported on Sunday that after years of living in the country, Monsur’s asylum application has been rejected by the First-Tier Tribunal immigration court. In a letter reviewed by the outlet, the judge ruled:
“I conclude that the Appellant is not truly gay, but he is trying to pass himself off as gay.”
WHAT?!
The judge argued there’s a “distinct lack of documentary material that might be suggestive that the Appellant was truly a gay man before he sought asylum.” Um, of course there wasn’t! He wasn’t allowed to be gay in his home country, remember? He told the outlet:
“Life in Bangladesh was very stressful and scary for me, especially because of my sexuality. I couldn’t live openly as a gay man there – if anyone found out, my life would be in danger. While in Bangladesh, no one knew about my sexuality. It wasn’t until I left and became active on social media that people became aware.”
Monsur submitted evidence of himself at Pride events, at gay clubs, and even of himself watching gay pornography, but the judge called it all “staged.” He ruled:
“There is, quite clearly, a great desire on the part of the Appellant to try to present this picture that he is a gay man but, in my judgment, there is far too much manufacturing and posturing and that, in my judgment, undermines the fundamental credibility of the Appellant.”
Whoa… How scary for Monsur! If he had to go back, it would be so dangerous! He told the outlet:
“LGBTQ+ rights in Bangladesh are virtually non-existent. Being gay is not only socially unacceptable but also illegal. If I were sent back to Bangladesh now, my life would be at serious risk. Since my sexuality is now publicly known due to my social media presence and activities, I could face violence or even be killed if I returned.”
Oh no!
