George Wendt -- Known For Playing Norm On Cheers -- Dead At 76

Hollywood has lost another legend.

George Wendt, known by fans as the beer-loving Norm from the ’80s sitcom Cheers, passed away at his home on Tuesday morning. His publicist, Melissa Nathan, confirmed the sad news in a statement obtained by Variety:

“George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend and confidant to all of those lucky enough to have known him. He will be missed forever. The family has requested privacy during this time.”

His cause of death has not been released, but it has been noted he passed away peacefully in his sleep. He was 76 years old.

George was in all 11 seasons of the hit TV series, and even appeared in two spinoffs, The Tortellis and Frasier. He was also a regular on Saturday Night Live alongside Chris Farley, Mike Myers, and Robert Smigel for their “Chicago Superfans” sketches which became a fan-favorite. Along with many other TV and film credits, he also starred on Broadway, including taking over the role of Edna Turnblad in Hairspray and playing Santa in Elf the Musical.
