Gilbert Gottfried‘s reputation for tasteless joking has almost become larger than the one for his voice.
He made them three weeks after 9/11, he made them right after Japan’s horrible earthquake, and now he’s making some about the East Coast rumble.
The comedian tweets:
Urgent. Find my tsunami jokes and insert East Coast Earthquake. New report… East Coast suffers an Earthquake. Japan is laughing its ass off.
Now, we think these pale in comparison to the Japan jokes which included one liners like “I was talking to my Japanese real estate agent. I said ├óΓé¼╦£is there a school in this area.├óΓé¼Γäó She said ├óΓé¼╦£not now, but just wait.├óΓé¼Γäó├óΓé¼┬¥
He also went on to joke about Japan calling to tell him his jokes may be a hit in America, but they’re sinking in Japan. …ouch!
Look, we get it. He’s a comedian. Comedians claim nothing is off limits, and while they’re completely protected by the first amendment, so are their listeners.
We all have the right to joke about something in poor taste, but if that’s how you make your money, you would think certain comedians — cough cough Adam Carolla cough cough — would be a little more business savvy and refrain from tacky jokes targeting natural disasters, whole groups of people, things humans have no control over, etc..
After all, sponsors can cut them and employers can fire them (as Aflac did when they Gottfried go).
Of course, we personally don’t find these recent jokes to be too offensive. Not because we’re on the West Coast, but just because all the East Coasters seem to be joking about the earthquake too.
