Giving Is The New Taking

There seems to be a new trend in retail employee theft: gift cards!

Yep, apparently employees who shoplift from their places of work have been doing so through the fraudulent use of gift cards. The Times reports that:

“Among the variations of such crimes, cashiers often do fake refunds of merchandise and then, with the amount refunded, use their registers to electronically fill gift cards, which they take. Or sometimes when shoppers buy gift cards, cashiers give them blank cards and then divert the shoppers’ money onto cards for themselves.”

Yikes!

We would be very unhappy to spend money on an empty gift card. Apparently one woman who worked at Saks stole $135,000 in gift cards from the high-end department store.

That’s a lot of money!

If you’re ripping off your place of work and its customers, shame on you!
