She’s gonna kill v. maim someone!
While Canada is usually more progressive than America when it comes to social issues, they don’t seem to be much better than us when nominating people for awards.
The nominees for the 2016 Juno Awards were revealed on Tuesday… and it’s clear they must have forgotten that females can make music, too — but one person who definitely didn’t forget is singer/musician/producer/artist Grimes.

The 27-year-old had her highest charting album of her career in 2015 with Art Angels, but she and most of her female peers were mysteriously overlooked by the music awards show, spawning the hashtag #JunosSoMale!
Naturally, Grimes took to Twitter to vent her frustrations in a series of now-deleted tweets, saying:
“women r kinda absent from the junos this year. no female noms for album, artist, engineer or producer of the year etc.”
“I don’t expect recognition, but I believe there were qualified women besides myself for many categories.”
“I can’t help but feel that if women were equally rewarded for technical work they would feel inclined to participate more”
“Anyhow I’ll probably have to delete these tweets and there r way bigger problems on planet earth but that’s my 2 centz”
“Example of sick female Canadian producers off the top of my head: Wondagurl, Allie X, Mozart’s Sister.. I know theres more but I’m sleepy x”
We totally agree with Grimes on this one — Art Angels is one of the best albums of the year, let alone all the other great female musicians’ works that were passed up!
In fact, Alessia Cara, Carly Rae Jepsen, Sarah Blackwood of Walk off the Earth, and Emily Haines of Metric were the only women nominated for any major awards.
BTW, Grimes wants to be clear she isn’t trying to trash the Junos. After deleting her tweets, she later explained:
@exclaimdotca I’m not blasting anyone, just discussing an issue, and I explicitly deleted my tweets to avoid inflammatory press like this.

There is no reason gurl should have to silence her voice on the subject! And we hate that she feels that way.
We’re not sure if the Juno Awards are going to attempt to fix the problem similarly to the Oscars‘ #OscarsSoWhite controversy… but hopefully people talking about it sparks a change for next year.
