The box office has a new king — and the total take-home from opening weekend is HUGE!
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was expected to be very big in theaters this weekend, but it even took home a bit more than what most industry forecasters had assumed, signaling a strong box office and (obviously) a pretty well-received film!

The final total for this Guardians 2 installment comes out to $145 million across 4,300 North American locations for the opener — a HUGE number and a perfect summer box office opener for Disney.
The company’s distribution chief, Dave Hollis, was happy about it, at least — here’s what he told THR:

“We feel great. It is a spectacular number, period. This is such a fresh and exciting film ├óΓé¼┬ª it’s the kind of event that gets people excited about going to theaters.”

Yeah, well, when you make $145 million in just the opening weekend, you’re bound to be pretty excited!
Starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper among many others, Guardians 2 is an escape thriller that also earned more than $100 million in international ticket sales from an earlier opener, too.
When you take into account EVERY dollar it’s earned, the number is already staggering: $428 million to date globally!
Not. Too. Bad!!!

An unlikely crowd pleaser when the first one came out, Guardians 2 continues to impress Hollis and the Disney folks, too:

“The strength of the brand is a license to take risks. These films have never just been superhero films, they are genre films. Each of these movies feels wholly and uniquely different.”

One thing connects them all, though: they make BIG money!
What about U, Perezcious readers?! Did U go see anything at the box office this weekend???
