A horrifying tragedy has unfolded in Poland, where at least six people have been killed and 15 others injured after a gunman opened fire on unsuspecting people in a crowded public square.

According to CBS News, the deadly attack happened around 3 p.m. local time on Saturday in Krakow’s historic Main Market Square, a popular destination for locals and tourists. Authorities say a man drove into the square and began shooting at random people from inside his vehicle.

Six people — four women and two men — lost their lives in the violence. The death toll was initially reported as five before regional officials confirmed another fatality.

Among the injured are two police officers who confronted the attacker. Poland’s interior minister, Marcin Kierwiński, confirmed that one officer was seriously wounded.

He praised the responding officers on X (Twitter), writing:

“Police officers in Kraków risked their lives to intervene. Immediately. Thanks to their heroic actions, the attacker was quickly apprehended.”

Police say the suspected gunman was shot during a confrontation with officers a short distance from the initial attack. He was subsequently taken into custody and transported to a hospital for treatment.

Authorities identified the suspect as a Polish citizen who allegedly acted alone. Krakow police spokesperson Katarzyna Cisło told TVN24 that the attacker wore military-style fatigues and carried a military-type long gun. Investigators also reportedly discovered additional weapons and ammunition inside his vehicle.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk addressed the tragedy on social media, stating:

“I am being kept informed by the Minister of the Interior about the situation in Krakow following the tragic shooting. … The police are investigating the background and all the circumstances of the attack.”

Tusk later traveled to Krakow from Warsaw as authorities continued their investigation.

The violence has deeply shaken Poland, where mass shootings of this magnitude are (or, were) virtually non-existent. One witness, a woman in her sixties named Annette, described the terrifying scene to Agence France-Presse:

“I saw a man shooting at people and walking around the square. It’s a tragedy for Krakow; we’ve never seen anything like this before.”

The tragedy has also drawn expressions of grief and solidarity from international leaders.

Tom Rose, the US ambassador to Poland, wrote:

“We are just learning details of the horrific mass shooting in Krakow, a savage and murderous attack that’s shattered the peace of Poland. America stands with Poland at this dark hour as Poland stands with her beloved citizens of Krakow.”

Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s top diplomat, similarly offered condolences, writing on X:

“The tragic loss of life in the shooting in Kraków is a tragedy that will be felt far beyond Poland. Poland’s strength lies in the resilience of its people. In this moment of grief, Poland does not stand alone.”

As of Saturday, authorities had not publicly established a motive for the attack, or any further information about the attacker beyond what’s been reported here. Investigators were continuing to piece together what led to the devastating violence.

And obviously, considering the fluid nature of this news and the ongoing situation here, it’s very possible that even more people could succumb to their injuries. We hope they don’t, of course, but sadly, we here in America know too well how these things usually work. It’s truly just terrible.
