There’s a devastating update on a woman who contracted hantavirus while on the MV Hondius cruise ship.
As we’ve been following, an outbreak of the virus happened on the vessel, leading to three deaths and multiple hospitalizations across several countries. Hantavirus typically spreads through rodent feces, urine, and saliva, but they’re dealing with the rare Andes strain, which is transferred between humans. There is no cure or treatment for an individual infected with the illness. Now doctors are sharing devastating news about a French woman, an infected passenger from MV Hondius.

According to the Associated Press, infectious disease specialist Dr. Xavier Lescure from Bichat–Claude Bernard Hospital in Paris, where the woman, whose identity has not been revealed, is being treated, said she is critically ill and relying on an artificial lung. Wow. He explained that she is suffering from a severe form of the disease that has caused life-threatening lung and heart problems.
With the help of the device, the doctor hopes enough pressure will be relieved on the lungs and heart to give them time to recover. That being said, Dr. Lescure stressed she is in “the final stage of supportive care.”
How heartbreaking! We’re keeping the woman and her family in our thoughts. Reactions, Perezcious readers? Tell us (below).
