Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag are doing their best to help their young children navigate this big loss.
The family is one of many who lost their home due to the Los Angeles wildfires this month. It’s a terrible thing for anyone to go through — and Heidi is hoping she can help their sons get through it without too much trauma getting bottled up and saved for later. Speaking to E! News on Thursday, the singer reflected on what she’s told their 7-year-old son Gunner, sharing:
“To be able to let him feel his emotions is really important and to feel that loss and not to compartmentalize it and have to unpack it later. That’s why he’s doing so well, as he’s been able to really vocalize that and feel that loss in the moment.”

Because Gunner is “old enough to understand” the fires, evacuation orders, and ultimately the loss of their home — as opposed to his 2-year-old brother Ryker — the parents are hoping he gets his emotions out now so he can start looking forward to the future. Heidi continued:
“We encourage him [that], you know, there’s a new life and there’s new things, and try to highlight him moving forward in his world and help him to do that step by step.”
She urged that she doesn’t want him “covering his feelings ’cause that’s not what would be helpful for him.” She’s so right! It’s important to let it all out!
One other way they’re hoping he won’t be too traumatized by this situation is by avoiding showing him any of the news coverage of the fires:
“The most important thing that we did throughout this was not let him see any TV, any interviews, any photos because there’s no reason to have that trauma and to associate it with an image. So, we just really have kept that between us.”
That’s probably good thinking! It’s impossible for him not to see some of the devastation these fires caused, but there’s no need for him to see more than necessary. It’s so scary and stressful for anyone, especially such a young child.
Spencer agreed with this mindset, noting:
“We’re going to find the good in this, and that’s all I try to focus on 24 hours a day, even when I’m sleeping.”
It helps that Heidi’s music has been doing so well since the fires. That’s a big bright spot for the fam! Hear more (below):
