Hermès Loses Their Chinese Trademark Case

Gather round, everyone! It’s time for a business lesson.
When companies become popular in China, the Chinese will sometimes call the company by a different name. It’s just a language transfer thing, but when this happens, it’s smart to go ahead an register the name given.
However, if they wait until they begin expansion in China, they might be too late — just ask Hermes.
The French company lost an appeal to register their Chinese name Ai Ma Shi with the China Trademark Appeal Board because an apparel company with the same name registered for it back in 1995.
Beijing lawyer Stan Abrams explained a local version of a brand’s name has more value than that of a foreign-language brand.
