This is so sad!
Wes Leonard, a 16-year-old Michigan high school basketball star, died after making the game-winning layup in overtime to cap his team’s perfect season.
He collapsed on the court and was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Leonard was a junior described as “by far, the best player on that basketball team” and an “outstanding athlete.”
The boys mother Jocelyn Leonard is a choir teacher at the middle and high schools and is the director of Fennville High’s production of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, which was cancelled due to the tragic circumstances.
The cause of death is not yet known, but what makes this loss particularly puzzling is the boys dedication to his body, praised by his basketball coach, Ryan Klingler, just days before his passing as he said:
“He takes care of his body better than probably anybody I’ve ever coached. Spends a lot of time on his own in the weight room. He’s a special kid.”
