Well, it’s Cinco de Mayo and a lot of tequila will be guzzled down today, but unfortunately there will also be some cultural appropriation.
But guess what? If you’re not a total asshole who doesn’t give a shit, you can avoid insulting an entire culture.
We’re here to help!
1. DON’T Wear A Sombrero, Fake Mustache, Or Poncho
By doing so you’ll only be perpetuating hurtful stereotypes. Remember, a culture is not a costume. You’ll also look like an epic douche like Brody Jenner (above).
#CincodeMayo reminders
– it├óΓé¼Γäós not Mexican Independence Day
– it├óΓé¼Γäós not celebrated in Mexico, only in Puebla
– don├óΓé¼Γäót wear “mexican costumes”

Hey it’s #CincodeMayo! Instead of donning fake sombreros, let’s support Mexican-owned businesses today. pic.twitter.com/MH82PYrS4c

2. DON’T Call It Mexican Independence Day
Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day. It’s actually the day commemorating the Battle of Puebla in 1862, when Mexican forces defeated the French even though they were woefully outnumbered.
Just a friendly reminder that #CincoDeMayo commemorates the Battle Of Puebla and not Mexican Independence Day [Sep 16]. 🇲🇽🇲🇽 #TheMoreYouKnow

Folks, let’s remember #CincodeMayo celebrates the Mexican army├óΓé¼Γäós victory over French forces at the Battle at Puebla in 1862. pic.twitter.com/fZLIrtgn3L

3. DON’T Be A Hypocrite
Don’t pretend you’re celebrating a culture when you’re also a hateful prick who supports Trumpelstilskin and wants a border wall built.

You’re not allowed to celebrate #CincodeMayo if you’re chanting #BuildThatWall you can’t have it both ways

Happy #CincodeMayo! Flashback: The awkward moment #Trump ate fast food made in America, promoted himself and said, “I love Hispanics, see?” pic.twitter.com/6LtzxeIQyr

4. DO Eat Tacos, Drink Coronas, & Support Latino Businesses
You can certainly celebrate by eating delicious Mexican food and drinking cervezas, tequilas, and margaritas to your heart’s content. Well, okay, don’t drink too much — you could get alcohol poisoning and, in horrible cases, actually die. Drink in moderation! But there’s nothing wrong with celebrating by enjoying a culture’s traditional foods and supporting its people.
I don’t care “Gringos” celebrating & loving our traditions & food, that’s good. Just don’t hate us the rest of the year. #CincodeMayo

Drink up, just leave the cultural appropriating costumes out. #CincoDeMayo 🍻🇲🇽🎊

Please, celebrate #CincoDeMayo by supporting a Latino-owned business instead of donning a sombrero like a frat boy jerk. https://t.co/L8FOzlMosz
