Ian Somerhalder left the entertainment industry behind… For what he says is a super “controversial” reason! V Wars fans might not want to hear this!
According to Ian, while chatting on the Haley on the Go podcast last week, he decided to take a step back from the acting world due to one big thing: the cancellation of his Netflix show. He said, at the very beginning, the show “wasn’t even watchable” by his standards! Ouch!
He said he “worked really hard” on the show, but the product wasn’t something he was proud of:
“I said to the studio, ‘I don’t want to put my name on this. I’ll give you the money back. I’ll give you millions of dollars’.”
OMG!!
It was so bad he offered to give them MILLIONS back to not air it?! That’s crazy!

His pal James Gibb ended up asking for “creative control of the show,” but Netflix didn’t give them any budget. James and Ian ended up raising $6 million of their own money to save the series, putting in “10 or 12 hours of footage in 6 days”. It was such a strenuous effort, Ian said it landed him in the hospital after his body “just shut down”. Oh man!
After making the show something he was proud of, the Vampire Diaries alum said:
“You give everything, and then the show was a hit. We built a show that was No. 1 in 103 territories out of 120 territories. It was a big deal.”
Sadly, despite all the success though, at some point “the execs were fighting, and someone quietly canceled the show”. What a bummer! Especially after all that work.
Ian said:
“And the powers that be at Netflix were like, ‘It’s unfortunate. Yes, it shouldn’t have happened. We can’t go back, because it would set a precedent that would be terrible, so the show is done’.”
After this huge loss, the 47-year-old said he no longer wanted his “career and livelihood to be dictated” by cancellations and powerful industry figures like this. So he was DONE:
“So I pulled the plug. That was it. I walked away’. These executives are bitching at each other, and I’m like, are you kidding me? Done. I’m out. That’s really the honest, kind of controversial way of why I walked away from the business.”
Good for him. As much as we know his fans miss seeing him on their screens, protecting your peace and mental health is always the most important thing.
