Vogue Italia is on the receiving end of a verbal tongue lashing from Iman after dubbing a pair of trendy gold hoop earrings “slave earrings”.
The magazine also wrote this about the earrings:
“If the name brings to the mind the decorative traditions of the women of colour who were brought to the southern United States during the slave trade, the latest interpretation is pure freedom.”
Iman said rather bluntly in an interview:
“They might as well have called them n***** earrings. Is it controversial? Yes. The naming of it, I don├óΓé¼Γäót get it. I sometimes wonder in this age of reality shows has it become part of the language – the more controversy the more [buzz] it creates.”
After the story went viral, Vogue Italia blamed it on poor translation, but Iman isn’t buying it.
She adds: “Slave does not make it ethnic. Mind you, it├óΓé¼Γäós not lost in translation – the word slave, we know what it is.”
Thoughts???
