Influencer Ashlee Jenae has passed away at the young age of 31, and her family wants answers, especially from her fiancé, who has apparently ghosted them!
Her loved ones announced the death of the social media personality, whose real name is Ashly Robinson, on Instagram on Sunday. According to the family, Ashlee went on “what should have been one of the happiest trips of her life” to Zanzibar, Africa, to celebrate her 31st birthday, which is on April 5th. Not only that, but she got engaged to Joe McCann while on a safari. However, days later, the statement said “that dream turned into our family’s worst nightmare” because Ashlee “was found unconscious in her villa” at the Zuri Zanzibar. She was taken to the local hospital, where she sadly died hours later.

Her “suspicious” death is now under investigation. The family continued:
“At this time there is an active investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ashly’s suspicious passing. Although we have many questions, we are placing our trust in the officials in Zanzibar and are working closely with them as we seek clarity and answers.”

Following the statement, TMZ reported that the North Unguja Regional Police Commander Benedict Mapujira revealed more details about Ashlee’s final moments. He claimed she and Joe got into a dispute at Zuri Zanzibar before her death. The situation got so bad that the hotel staff stepped in, separated them into different rooms, and contacted the authorities out of concern for Ashlee’s well-being. A report was made to the Nungwi Police Station.
Police say she died the following day, on Friday, April 10th. An official cause of death has yet to be determined, but a local news report claimed law enforcement believes Ashlee died by suicide. However, the lifestyle content creator’s family is having a hard time believing that. They want to review the surveillance footage from during the trip to get a timeline AND more answers from Joe before they come to any sort of conclusion about what happened to Ashlee. Unfortunately, her fiancé may not be of much help…
Ashlee’s parents — Harry and Yolanda, along with their respective partners — spoke to TMZ‘s Charlie Neff on Tuesday about her death, saying:
“We’re not too sure what happened. That’s what we’re trying to find out. I got two emails today from the embassy in Zanzibar, and they said the investigation is still ongoing. That we have not determined the cause of death yet at all. … Nothing official has been released. That’s what we’re trying to find out, we just want answers.”
They all find one thing very “odd” about the whole situation, though. Joe, the supposed love of her life, has barely contacted them! Ashlee’s dad explained Joe only reached out once — 11 hours after she was taken to the hospital:
“We just think it’s very odd that our daughter is traveling with Joe, and we don’t hear anything from Joe. To me, that’s very odd. And initial call that she got from Joe was 11 hours after something had transpired in the room. And that’s very odd. 11 hours later, something had transpired, and Joe just related to Yana that Ashly was OK and she was stable and she was Ok and don’t worry about it.”
But Ashlee died at the hospital after. Since then, they said that “there has been no communication” with Joe. Since Joe is not talking to them, the family is hoping to get their hands on the security footage so they can piece together a better timeline:
“Was there any footage? Did you look at the footage? Did you see the footage? These are things that’s very important to us. These are things that can clear everything up. It gives us a timeline. It lets us know what happened. We have not seen or heard or even anything about any kind of footage surveillance. These are things that we need to know.”
But what they do know is that they never suspected Ashlee of suffering from her mental health:
“I don’t think that’s farther from the truth. If you go to her page, you know, she’s a beacon of light. She likes being in the limelight. It’s like being in the camera. She was an influencer. She loved her family.”
Unfortunately, what people post on social media doesn’t tell the full story of what is going on in their lives. They may seem like the happiest people online while they’re really struggling offline. We’ve sadly seen this happen so many times.
Hopefully, Ashlee’s loved ones can get answers about what happened to her soon. Watch the family’s interview (below):
