A decent start. Certainly not the best for Clint Eastwood, but it looks promising all the same.
Last night, Clint’s latest biopic J. Edgar, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, was screened in seven theaters in key cities. The tale of the infamous F.B.I head honcho opened to $53K, playing in cities such as Los Angeles, New York and Washington, D.C.
The idea of these screenings is to build word of mouth and garner some early reviews. So far, we haven’t heard much feedback about it, but we can judge the movie based on the money it brought in. It held up alright, averaging $7,571. It didn’t live up to Mystic River, which debuted in 13 theaters to $98,766 for an average $7,597, but it did almost as well as Hereafter, which grossed $60,701 from six theaters.
Here’s hoping the numbers stay the course when the movie opens this weekend.
