Keep your Movember, boys. Januhairy is the new annual event that challenges women to boycott shaving for the month and embrace their natural body hair — and it’s already causing quite a stir on social media.
Just like how Movember encourages men to grow out their mustaches to raise awareness of men’s health issues, Januhairy encourages ladies to grow out their hair to raise awareness of (SOME OF) the societal demands designed to make women feel disgusted with their bodies (and therefore more prone to self-esteem issues, which can sometimes snowball into comparing and competing with other women, in a sick cycle of keeping women down and detached from their own power).
This new movement was started by U.K. drama student Laura Jackson (pictured above), who got the idea after realizing how liberated she felt when she grew out her body hair for a role.

In a post on Januhairy’s official Instagram page (so you know it’s legit!), Jackson revealed that not shaving after the performance “really opened [her] eyes to the taboo of body hair on a woman,” writing:
“After a few weeks of getting used to it, I started to like my natural hair. I also started to like the lack of uncomfortable episodes of shaving.”
While Jackson decided she liked her au natural look and wanted to keep it, her peers weren’t the most understanding. So she decided to put her frustrations into action: she took Januhairy to social media — and, to her surprise, the movement quickly grew.
Nine days into the month, thousands of participants have shared empowering selfies of their body hair on Instagram with the hashtag #januhairy. As Jackson explained, Januhairy “isn’t an angry campaign for people who don’t see how normal body hair is, but more an empowering project for everyone to understand more about their views on themselves and others.”
Naturally, the movement has been met with some negativity on social media. Among the many to express their repulsion was Piers Morgan, who tweeted:
Surely, even in these divisive times, we can all unite on one thing: #Januhairy is lazy & revolting. pic.twitter.com/Ly8pEUXZpR

Of course, the prepubescent-minded backlash only supports the movement’s cause by showing society’s ingrained programming perpetuated by the Beauty Industrial Complex. Yes, the roots run that deep.
What do U think, Perezious readers? Will you be putting down your razor in solidarity with your hairy sisters?
