JD and Usha Vance have Erika Kirk to thank for expanding their family!
In a new interview on CBS Sunday Morning out this weekend, the couple revealed how a conversation with Erika Kirk after the death of her husband Charlie encouraged them to try for another child. The pair already share Ewan, 9, Vivek, 6, and Mirabel, 4.
Usha, who is expecting her fourth child due in late July, explained:
“I think it really heightened JD’s sense that he’d been talking about this for a while, this sense that there was this possibility of having another kid whom he could love as much as the three that we had.”

In his upcoming book, Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith, JD said Erika felt regret after “having only two kids with Charlie” — and this was a revelation she shared as Usha “held” her “on the first day of her terrible sorrow.” The politician reflected:
“For years, I’d asked Usha to have another baby, and for years, she told me she was done, especially now that public service had elevated us into the national spotlight. But something changed for Usha, and not long after we buried my friend, she became pregnant with our fourth child, a boy.”
It seems that really stuck with him, Usha continued:
“It really did crystallize for you, that sense that if you could have that other child, then you would have nothing to regret. And if we couldn’t have that other child, then we were very happy with the children that we had.”
She added:
“It was very powerful, what [Erika] said about her own family, and certainly very moving to both of us.”
But she clarified that while Erika’s comments played a part in the decision, they were not the deciding factor:
“I think I had already started to open my mind to the possibility. I wouldn’t say that this was, for me in any way, the decisive factor. But it came in the middle of a conversation that we were already having.”
It’s certainly interesting that, of all people, Erika was the one to influence them! As you’ll remember, it wasn’t long after the Turning Point USA founder’s death that Erika was sparking affair rumors with the VP! LOLz! And there was a lot of divorce speculation at the time for JD and Usha — until they suddenly had a bun in the oven! The timing was no doubt a little wild!
Later in the interview, Usha opened up about being the second known wife of a vice president to welcome a child in office:
“Well, my view is that the world is always a chaotic place. There are always dangers in the world. There are always uncertainties, but having children has given me a sense of purpose and it brings infinite joy and hope for the future. So, I don’t see having a child right now is any different from having a child nine years ago when our first child was born. There’s still that sense of promise that comes with it.”
Donald Trump‘s right-hand man agreed:
“[She] said it better than I could, which is that having a baby is fundamentally, I think, a hopeful thing. … I think you have to have some hope for the future. And I think both of us have a lot of hope for the future, and it’s hard not to when you spend your life around a 9-year-old and a 6-year-old and a 4-year-old — just the perspective that they have on life and on everything, how fresh and exciting everything is, it’s just it’s hard not to feel very good about the world.”
He said he and his wife are “very lucky to be able to live the life that we lead,” concluding:
“And I think our baby is going to come into a family that’s in a very, very good spot and where he’s going to be able to grow and thrive and experience the world and God’s creation in all these fascinating ways. And that’s all I could really hope for out of a new life. And I’m grateful that we’re doing it again.”
The death of a friend is bound to change anyone’s perspective! And no wonder Usha wanted to clarify her hubby’s Erika comments after all the rumors that have spread already!
