We learned not too long ago that Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Hudson turned down the role of Precious that later went to Gabourey Sidibe. The reason she gave for turning down another shot at an Oscar nom was weight related, as she had said:
“I had [gained weight] with Effie [in Dreamgirls] and as much as I was moved by this film, I wanted to try a role that had nothing whatsoever to do with my weight.”
However, J-Hud wants to clarify that her decision to pass on the role was not only motivated by weight. When caught on the streets by paparazzi, the Weight Watchers spokeswoman changed her story by saying:
“I did NOT turn down the role because of the weight thing. I turned it down because I felt it was just too graphic for me at that time.”
That could be the case and even if her choice was weight related, in the end, the role went to the right actress because newcomer Gabourey nailed that performance!
You can say no to a role for any reason you want, Jennifer! No need to feel the need to explain yourself. We know you will get another opportunity to shine on the big screen soon enough.
