Jerry had reportedly been staying at the Biltmore Hotel in Montecito and started feeling sick after going to a Fourth of July barbeque on Saturday.
His partner, Susie, called an ambulance in the middle of the night, for what the Hollywood agent had thought was only food poisoning.
When he got to the hospital, doctors told Jerry he had a bowel obstruction, but the CT scan didn’t reveal anything of concern.
For the next 30 hours, the Ocean’s Eleven producer stayed in his hospital bed while the medical professionals tried to figure out what was wrong.
Then early Monday morning, Jerry insisted he be allowed to leave, but the doctors declined, explaining that they still needed to monitor him.
The talent agent had his first heart attack just after 6 a.m. that morning. So, doctors scanned him again and saw that his bowel had ruptured, but they aren’t sure when exactly it had happened.
Jerry was then moved to the ICU, where two hours later he suffered the second heart attack. He passed away just before 1 p.m. on Monday.
The 77-year-old was an incredible force in both the film and music industries. In addition to the Ocean‘s movies, he also produced The Karate Kid, and managed such stars as Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, and Barbara Streisand.
Our hearts go out to everyone affected by this truly sad loss.
