Voters in the Garden State only had one thing to vote on during Election Day; whether or not to allow sports betting at Jersey casinos.
Voters passed the initiative with an impressive 64% of the vote. Too bad it’s still illegal according to federal law.
Voters were also not told that this law is illegal.
State Senator Raymond Lesniak hopes to introduce a bill to Congress to allow sports betting in New Jersey. Currently, only Nevada, Oragon, Montana and Delaware are allowed to place bets on sports games. Lesniak hopes to get the initiative in effect by early 2012.
A big obstacle is the NFL, who opposses all sports betting, stating that allowing legalized betting would “undermine the integrity of the game.”
If passed, New Jerseyans won’t be allowed to bet on college games played in New Jersey nor will they be allowed to bet on games featuring college from Jersey.
We’ve got a nickel on this probably not working out.
