Jimmy Carter Takes His Battle Against The Guinea Worm To The Sudan

We had no idea this was such an important cause to him. Very inspiring!

For the last 24 years, Jimmy Carter has been waging war against one common enemy of the world – the guinea worm. The parasite affects inhabitants of some of the poorest countries in the world, who consume the worm through drinking stagnant water. Once upon a time, there were thousands upon thousands of cases of the affliction all over Africa. Now, thanks to Jimmy and his dedication to those in need, there were fewer than 1,700 this past year, contained within four countries: Ethiopia, Ghana, Mali and Sudan.

According to reports, Jimmy is concentrating his efforts now on the Sudan, providing the country with education and prevention against the worms – and he won’t rest until he eradicates them all. As Jimmy puts it:

“I’m still determined to outlive the last guinea worm.”
