It sounds like we’re still grasping at straws for who or what to blame in the wake of all the horrible shootings and murders that happen in this country, and we just hope that they don’t jerk-their knees in the direction of things that shouldn’t be blamed.
Biden made it clear today that the administration is calling for studies on violent video games and possible links to real-life violence, and that it’s a call that won’t go away.
As long as we’re looking into it thoroughly, there shouldn’t be a problem. The facts out there could just as well unburden the heat on these types of games as they could incriminate them. We just don’t want them to half-azz a study and have an innovative story-telling industry take the hit for it!
Another thing to think about is looking into the fact that there’s already a rating system in place. At what point are the parents and guardians responsible for the content their kids consume, and hasn’t this been an argument with movies and television for decades?? Should an art form suffer because of this??
We ARE glad that during his meeting with the entertainment industry, he admits that there simply is no concrete data on video games and possible links to violence — and that he wasn’t exactly pointing blame. So why not investigate?
The White House plan released last week asked Congress to give $10 million for the CDC to study gun violence, including possible links to violent video games and media images. Today, Biden just wanted to be clear on this:
├óΓé¼┼ôLet these people go out and look at the pathology that├óΓé¼Γäós behind this, if there is a pathology related to gun violence [and] let the facts lead where they will.”
Sounds good!
And who knows — maybe this will lead people to realize that there are a huge number of amazing games out there that don’t resort to using violence in their storytelling anyway. If you’ve ever played last year’s Journey, you know what we mean!
