John Cusack is taking a creative swing!
The 2012 actor appeared at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, where he opened up about putting his Hollywood acting career on the back burner to pursue an new career endeavor: writing graphic novels! During a panel with Variety, he explained why the unexpected storytelling medium has recently won over his attention:
“I always thought [graphic novels] were the closest things to film, really. You’re picking out shots, they’re so cinematic.”

The 60-year-old, who kicked off his acting career in the early ‘80s, revealed he decided to shift his attention to writing because he “didn’t [want to] negotiate telling a story.”
“When you ask somebody to put $20 million or $30 million into a bank account [for a film], they want to have an opinion and they’re afraid and all that stuff.”
So to him, it feels like he has a LOT more creative control when telling stories through graphic novels as opposed to BIG Hollywood productions with opinions of countless producers and studio officials.
So what does he have in store? According to Simon & Schuster, the publisher behind John, he and illustrator Ignacio Noé have teamed up to “deliver a wild, genre-bending road trip with cosmic stakes” in a graphic novel titled Momo! Read the full description (below):
“Two fugitives form an uneasy alliance on a mission tied to none other than Jackie Gleason — yes, that Jackie Gleason — and quickly find themselves in way over their heads. John went on to promise HIS creative vision will be on full display in Momo during his SDCC panel:
“This was just like, I wrote it, and I said, ‘I like the story,’ and then I got this beautiful, wonderful artist, Ignacio Noé, to do the illustrations and so nobody edited anything I wrote or that he drew. So it’s really a piece of work that was just done by two people. It was just me and Ignacio’s story, and that doesn’t happen today. There’s no bull, and there’s no committee. There’s no computer up in Seattle that’s poll testing it.”
