Juanes is lending his voices to John Legend‘s #FreeAmerica movement.
On Wednesday, the Colombian musician and the soulful singer joined forces outside Eloy Immigration Detention Center in Arizona, where they performed to draw attention to the immigration issue in the U.S.
The two artists put on a moving rendition of Bob Marley‘s Redemption Song to a small crowd of people protesting “crimmigration.”
However, they were NOT allowed to sing inside for the detained immigrants. Instead, they set up shop on top of a flatbed truck across the street, in the hopes that the incarcerated people could hear.

Unfortunately, organizers learned that they weren’t allowed out of their cells for the performance.
But the two singers were able to meet some of the detainees and get a glimpse of the conditions inside the facility. Juanes was upset by what he witnessed, saying in Spanish:

“It’s very hard to understand that someone is deprived of their freedom unjustly, and that’s why we’re here with our music, with our culture, which is the strongest tool to bring attention and give a voice to those who don’t have one.”

During the performance, Chrissy Teigen‘s husband explained to the crowd that he wants to share the quality of detainee’s living conditions with the world, in the hopes of reforming the system:

“The reason why we’re here, one, is because we want to bear witness to what’s happening so we could tell the world about it.”

John initiated the #FreeAmerica campaign to address issues surrounding mass incarceration, and transform the criminal justice system.
