Alice Through The Looking Glass Bombs At The Box Office Amid The Drama Surrounding Johnny Depp!

Ouch!
Alice Through The Looking Glass debuted in theaters over the weekend, and despite some pretty optimistic predictions heading into the premiere, things are BAD for the flick — probably in no small part to the fact that Johnny Depp is in it!

The flick generated just over $28.1 million in theaters over the three day weekend, and will hit about $35 million in its estimated four-day debut.
Yikes! That’s more than 70% behind Tim Burton‘s Alice In Wonderland, which opened in 2010 as a 3D film.
Of course, the PR nightmare surrounding Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard probably played a large part in this; her allegations came out at the worst possible time for the movie and no doubt had some sort of role in tanking it for audiences across the country.
Dave Hollis, Disney‘s distribution head, sounded pretty disappointed with the results:

“It’s disappointing. The domestic opening is wildly less than what every tracking service had us at. We’re in the tentpole business. More often than not, they turn out to be huge successes. We’ll continue to take those big bets. In this instance, it didn’t turn out as we hoped.”

Not turning out as they hoped is, uh, an understatement.

The big winner at the box office this week was Bryan Singer‘s X-Men: Apocalypse. The action flick took home $265.8 million — nearly ten times what Alice came away with in the same period!
What do U think — was Depp’s bad week a cause of Alice‘s box office flop, or was it just a bad movie to begin with?!
