Sometimes our harshest critic is ourself!
Just ask Joss Whedon, the dude who sired the third highest grossing film of all-time but thinks he could have done better.
In less than a year, The Avengers became one of the most popular movies ever.
Critics loved it, fans cherished it, even international audiences fed undoubtedly wacky translations revered it — by any metric, The Avengers is one of the greatest films of the year.
Unless, of course, you ask the writer and director.
Joss admitted:
“I don’t think it’s a perfect movie. I don’t even think it’s a great movie. I think it’s a great time, and I’m proud of it, but for me, what was exciting is that people don’t go to see a movie that many times unless it’s pulling on something from within, unless there’s a need there. That’s very gratifying.”
WHAT?!! It’s not even out on DVD and it’s already grossed $1.5 billion dollars!
And you don’t think it’s a great movie!?!?
Did Tom Hiddleston poke you with his mind-control stick?!
Nope. To Joss, there’s just more to filmmaking than cash in hand.
He admitted:
“…at some point, the numbers become meaningless. They’re large, and you can’t really count that high.”
If not making bank, then what is his motivation?
He confessed:
“I felt like summer movies haven’t been what I remember them to be, so I felt like I would love to evoke something that’s less hip and ironic and more heartfelt and character-driven, and apparently, other people cared about that in a large way.”
Oh, J-Dub! Were doth ye find all this integrity?
If we were responsible for a film that successful, we would DEMAND bronze statues erected in our likeness outside of every movie theater in the world, LOLz!!
Yet here Joss is, striving for perfection!! Hopefully that bodes well for the sequel!
