The judge in the Gilgo Beach murders had a few choice words for Rex Heuermann during his sentencing.
As you may know, Heuermann was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in 2023 for killing Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello, as well as second-degree murder for the deaths of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Jessica Taylor, Sandra Costilla, and Valerie Mack. He pleaded guilty to the crimes earlier this year, as well as admitting to the murder of Karen Vergata in 1996, for which he was never charged. Now Heuermann has been sentenced.
Judge Timothy Mazzei sentenced Heuermann to three consecutive life terms in prison without the possibility of parole and 100 years to life for the murders on Wednesday. While handing down the punishment, multiple reports claimed the judge ripped into the convicted killer, calling him a “disgusting and despicable man.” People reported Mazzei added:
“You’re a disgusting, small man. If you’re a man at all. And you’re a coward.”
He then ordered Heuermann to be removed from the courtroom, saying:
“Get him out of here.”
As the murderer got escorted out, some of the victims’ families erupted in applause and chanted “ogre.”
