We’re so glad he’s safe. If the reports are true, though, then we just don’t know what to say about why he jumped.
Oh, right, yes we do: If the other kids in the group urged him to do it, and peer pressure made him, then that’s just a horrible thing to do. And as for the jumper, you should surround yourself with some better friends.
This story could have ended in tragedy very easily, like, 98%-of-the-time easily.
Because that’s the percentage of leaps being fatal from the bridge.
Here’s some of what happened:
Most jumpers die a grisly death, with massive internal injuries, broken bones and skull fractures. Some die from internal bleeding, while others drown.
But the 17-year-old lived, and a statement from his school said he suffered no severe injuries beyond bruising and tenderness. He was rescued by a surfer who paddled over and took him ashore, California Highway Patrol Officer Chris Rardin said.
Extremely. Lucky.
Unfortunately the Golden Gate Bridge is a veritable hot spot for suicidal jumpers, having an average of one every two weeks.
The city is looking at options to install some sort of suicide prevention on the bridge, perhaps a steel netting.
People should never urge someone to do something like this, whether or not they know the person will take it seriously.
And if it was because of depression, then, suicide will never be the answer. Seeking help is always, always the best solution.
