It’s that time of year again – the time of year where Grammy voters start gearing up to pick who they think should be the nominees for this coming year’s top honors.
Before they make their choices, however, there is someone they should consult: Kanye West. (Rather, he thinks they should consult him.)
Kanye has always been known to be outspoken when it comes to awards or awards shows or during awards shows or after awards shows or…well, you get it. Now, he’s reaching out to the voters, hoping that they will consider what he has to say when casting their vote. He starts with the most coveted award, Album of the Year, and calls the picks for the last four years “with all due respect├óΓé¼┬ª inaccurate.”
With all due respect, in one fell swoop, you’ve managed to insult Ray Charles, an icon in music history, and Taylor Swift…again! What else you got?
Kanye continues to say that voters need to disassociated their choice for best album from its sales figures and really listen to the music they are voting for. He drops examples of “great” records, like JT’s SexyBack and Usher’s Confessions, that sold well, but never saw a big award. (Which is false because both albums won Grammys, just not the top honor)
Then, he takes aim and fires directly at two of the major awards shows in the biz:
“I pinpoint the Grammys and the VMAs because they have to take responsibility, because they mean something to us. Little kids, 6 years [old], that are singing in front of the mirror. They’re also thinking about their Grammy speech; they’re thinking about when there will be a VMA so these people, whoever run them… they have to take some responsibility to say what really happened in culture this year because we’re marking it down.”
Uh-huh. If you’re like us, by now you’re wondering if all of this is just stemming from sour grapes, but Kanye is one step ahead of that game. He reveals that his intention is only to preserve the honor of music history and nothing more. He explains:
“It’s not about me. ‘Runaway’… I don’t really care about me. That’s what you don’t understand,” he said. “I’ll jump in front of a moving car for history. It’s not really about me. It’s about everybody. It’s about all artists. It’s about fair ground. If Drake is having an awesome year and his year is better than mine, I’m not gonna say I should win. I’m gonna say Drake should win.”
And perhaps he will! We just hope you are this gracious should he take a honor away from you!
Why do we have the feeling that this years Grammys is going to be anything but boring?
P.S. – Can someone just give him one of these trophies already so we can call it a day? He does actually deserve one or two of them at this point.
