This poor, poor child.
A woman named Korryn Shandawn Gaines was shot and killed on Monday afternoon in Maryland after a six-hour standoff with police — and her 5-year-old son was wounded amid the gunfire between Gaines and cops.

The boy is expected to survive, thankfully, and authorities are still determining whether the round that wounded him was shot by Gaines herself, or the police, but obviously this is something nobody wanted to happen.
Baltimore County police spokeswoman Elise Armacost said of the incident at a press conference:
“We are of course extremely upset at an event like this. We do not like to be in a position of having to use lethal force, but this was a situation where our officers exercised patience for hours and hours. We are very relieved the child was not seriously injured.”
Scary!!
Cops had initially showed up at the 23-year-old’s apartment to serve arrest warrants on Gaines, as well as a man living there. The man had been wanted for assault, while Gaines was on the cops’ radar for felony disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and “numerous other traffic offenses,” according to Baltimore County Police Chief James Johnson.
When officers finally gained entry to Gaines’ apartment, they found her sitting on the floor, pointing a long gun at them, and they quickly retreated into the hallway.

The male suspect attempted to flee from the apartment while carrying a one-year-old child, but he was quickly apprehended, and neither he nor the baby were injured.
As for Gaines, she lay in wait for the next several hours with the five-year-old boy next to her, repeatedly pointing her gun at officers and making threatening remarks to police, including:
“If you don’t leave, I’m going to kill you.”
She even took video during the standoff, posting it to social media and showing her five-year-old talking about the police (below):

And tension stayed high throughout the day, with Gaines even allegedly taking video — in which you can hear her son — showing the cops in full body armor in her apartment (below):

At some point after 3:00 pm local time, with police on high alert, gunfire erupted — and in the exchange, Gaines was struck multiple times and killed.

The boy was wounded at that point but was quickly pulled out of the apartment and taken to the hospital for treatment.

So, so sad on all counts.

Not only did Gaines have those outstanding traffic offenses that kicked off this entire tragedy, she had also interacted with the police many times before.
Here is an alleged video of Gaines speaking with a police officer after being pulled over (below), allegedly in March of this year though the video itself is undated:
#KorrynGaines has had encounters with Baltimore County PD before! She was WOKE af!! This is her in the video:pic.twitter.com/LB0M7s0Dex

In another clip of that same alleged March traffic stop, Gaines can be heard talking to a child in the back seat — presumably the same one involved in yesterday’s shooting — about recording the officers dealing with her (below):

Predictably, social media was ablaze Tuesday morning, with the hashtag #KorrynGaines spreading like wildfire as people learned of the shooting and reacted to the aftermath.
Obviously, as we’ve seen with other recent cases of black people being killed by law enforcement, outrage was palpable online — but it wasn’t quite as cut and dry in this instance considering the involvement of Gaines’ son during the standoff and negotiations.

I don’t know exactly what happened in the #KorrynGaines incident. I need more facts to surface. Hopefully, it’s not another public execution

Regardless of the specifics, it’s always so sad to lose a life like this, doubly so when a five-year-old child was present — and nearly killed, as well.
Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by this life-changing situation.
