We’ve heard a lot of behind-the-scenes takes on the making of The Canyons. Even Lindsay Lohan herself has admitted to being a nightmare to work with during the infamous shoot.
Now finally the film’s director Paul Schrader has given his own take on working with LiLo.
And far from a nightmare, Paul says working with Lindsay was ‘a treat,’ despite all the dramz! Though he does admit to the cray cray behavior as well! In fact, he compares it to the behavior of another troubled starlet- Marilyn Monroe! He writes:
“While preparing and directing The Canyons I was reading James Goode├óΓé¼Γäós book The Making of the Misfits, and I was struck by the similarities between Marilyn Monroe and the actress I was working with, Lindsay Lohan…
Tardiness, unpredictability, tantrums, absences, neediness, psychodrama├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥yes, all that, but something more, that thing that keeps you watching someone on screen, that thing you can├óΓé¼Γäót take your eyes off of, that magic, that mystery…
I think Lohan has more natural acting talent than Monroe did, but, like Monroe, her weakness is her inability to fake it. She feels she must be experiencing an emotion in order to play it. This leads to all sorts of emotional turmoil, not to mention on-set delays and melodrama. It also leads, when the gods smile, to movie magic. Monroe had the same affliction. They live large, both in life and on screen. This is an essential part of what draws viewers to them…
From a selfish point of view, from a director├óΓé¼Γäós point of view, that is, from my point of view, it was a treat to work with Lindsay. All the drama, the mishegas, all the stress├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥that means little. A director can shoot around misbehavior. He can├óΓé¼Γäót shoot around lack of charisma. I just wish it was easier for Lindsay.”
Wow! What an interesting point of view! It certainly doesn’t sound as bad as we’ve heard. Then again, maybe Paul is just blowing up Marilyn’s Lindsay’s skirt?
