Luigi Mangione was in a LOT of “agony” before allegedly shooting Brian Thompson… And an old Reddit account possibly belonging to him proves it.
In the wake of the 26-year-old’s arrest on Monday for the murder of the UnitedHealthcare CEO, netizens have been scouring the internet to find any and all hints from his past. We’ve already seen what he considered revolutionary on his Goodreads account, and now an old Reddit page is providing more details.
As we know, the Ivy League grad suffered a painful back injury prior to allegedly murdering Thompson, and grappled with lasting and debilitating pain as a result. We mean, the guy would apparently be laid up for DAYS at a time and couldn’t even have sex because of it! And seemingly in his own words, he was in “constant pain”!

Archived posts from a suspended Reddit account under the name Mister_Cactus, which Luigi allegedly made all the way back in 2016, describe the state of his condition. In one subreddit from April relating to spondylolisthesis, a painful spinal misalignment, Mister_Cactus noted his condition “went bad to the point where I felt it every day.” Another post from October 2023 reads:
“Constant pain means something is wrong.”
“Constant pain”? Damn.
Yoni Ashar, PhD, an assistant professor at the University of Colorado’s Anschutz Medical Campus, told NBC News on Wednesday that back pain can cause a “vicious cycle” of “agony” for sufferers:
“It could be the endless agony from the moment you wake up to the moment you manage to fall asleep, if you’re able to sleep. It’s just nonstop, always there, always hurting.”
Whoa…
In other posts from last year, Mister_Cactus wrote about what Ashar described — that his sleep was always “restless,” and that no matter how much he got, he always felt “unrefreshed.” The user also noted his back injury flared up after a surfing trip, after which he slipped causing his “right glute locked and right leg shut down for a week.” In other posts, he debated whether he should undergo a spinal fusion to treat his spondylolisthesis. One in particular reads:
“When my spondy went bad on me last year (23M) it was completely devastating as a young athletic person. This is not to encourage surgery per se, but just to provide reassurance that athletic life is totally normal after fusion if/when the surgery is necessary”
It remains unconfirmed whether or not the account truly does belong to Luigi. What are your thoughts on this update?
