We’re still tearing up over this lovely (and history-making) TV moment!
Macklemore, Madonna, and Ryan Lewis brought together 33 same-sex and opposite-sex couples to be married LIVE during their Grammys performance last night!
Not only was this ceremony ground-breaking and seen by millions—but it’s huge step forward for the gay community!
And that’s why GLAAD President Sarah Kate Ellis thanked the rap duo and Madge for celebrating “the love and commitment of gay couples.”
She confessed:
“When such a critically acclaimed and popular rap artist puts marriage equality center stage at one of the biggest events of the year, it is the latest in a long line of signs that our nation not only accepts, but celebrates the love and commitment of gay couples today. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis aren’t only talented musicians, but are setting the bar high for our allies around the country today.”
The weddings were officiated by Queen Latifah while Same Love was performed by the rapping duo—along with Mary Lambert and jazz musician Trombone Shorty.
When the couples sealed the deal to their nuptials, Madonna came out belting Open Your Heart to finish up the epic moment!
Backstage, Macklemore revealed why incorporating the ceremonies into his performance was so important:
“It’s a message of quality, tolerance, compassion, to end homophobia, bigotry and hatred which has been an institution here in America. Loving who you want to love. I don’t think a song like ‘Same Love’ would be embraced years ago. It’s a testament to where we’re headed in this country.”
