Andrew Griffiths, a 43-year-old amateur fisherman, was on a boat fishing in Milford Haven, Wales.
While using a standard 20-pound line, fishing for sea bass, he hooked something a bit larger than a bass…
A 235-pound, 8-foot-long porbeagle shark!
He said:
“I knew that it was going to be big but I never expected it to be that big. The shark actually managed to turn the boat and I had to walk around the boat on three occasions as it kept changing direction. I really had to work hard, as did the other crew on the boat, but to land it was immense and I felt so great afterwards.
It was unbelievable and I am so happy to have landed such a big one. It is a career fish, definitely. I have joined the 200lb-plus club which is something I have always wanted to do and I am very proud to be part of that.
I really enjoy fishing, it is a huge passion of mine. Would I like to catch a bigger one? Definitely. It was a massive challenge but one I would absolutely take on again.”
The shark, part of the great white family, was a huge catch but not the biggest ever.
Last year, a porbeagle shark was caught weighing over 500-pounds, at 10-feet-long in the UK!
The best part is there’s a happy ending├óΓé¼┬ª the shark was returned to the sea shortly after being hooked!! Freedom!
