26-Year-Old Man Dies In Cape Cod Shark Attack

Arthur Medici Killed In Cape Cod Shark Attack

So scary.
Over the weekend, Massachusetts had its first fatal shark attack in more than 80 years on a Cape Cod beach.
A 26-year-old man died after the shark apparently attacked him while he was out swimming on a boogie board in the water at Newcomb Hollow Beach in Wellfleet, Massachusetts, out on the Cape.

The Wellfleet Police Department shared the story first on social media, reporting the man’s passing after initially being wounded by the shark, and while noting the investigation into what exactly occurred was taking place (below):

The man was later identified as engineering student Arthur Medici.
Witnesses on the beach told the AP about the incident, too, including Joe Booth, a local fisherman who was on shore and saw everything happen (below):

“I was that guy on the beach screaming, ‘Shark, shark!’ It was like right out of that movie Jaws. This has turned into Amity Island real quick out here.”

Wow.
The last fatal shark attack in Massachusetts took place all the way back in 1936, so these occurrences are obviously very, very, very rare. Still incredibly sad, though.
Medici’s family has started a GoFundMe to raise money for his funeral expenses.
