Man Discovered Dead Inside Walk-In Freezer In 'Unfortunate Incident' At North Carolina Grocery Store

A North Carolina grocery store employee was found dead in the store’s walk-in freezer.

On Tuesday morning, police officers in the city of Raleigh were called to the scene of a Food Lion on Capital Boulevard to investigate a report of a deceased person. When officers arrived around 7:00 a.m. local time, they confirmed there was in fact a dead adult male located in the supermarket’s walk-in freezer. They did not release the man’s name but later confirmed with People and other media outlets that he was a supermarket employee. They’re investigating further into the cause of his death.

When asked to confirm the veracity of the incident, Food Lion’s corporate center in the nearby city of Salisbury, North Carolina released this statement to the magazine about the unnamed employee’s death:

“Food Lion is deeply saddened by the unexpected loss of our associate. We express our deepest condolences to the associate’s family and friends.”

Now, the Food Lion store on Capital Boulevard in Raleigh and its corporate office are both cooperating with the Raleigh PD as they work to determine exactly what led to the man’s death. The grocery store chain’s statement on the tragedy continued:

“Food Lion is cooperating with local authorities in their investigation of this unfortunate incident. As always, the safety and well-being of customers and associates are daily priorities for Food Lion, and we are committed to ensuring a safe place to work and shop. We are providing resources to support our associates during this difficult time.”

So, so sad.

As of now, per WFMY News, foul play is not suspected in the man’s death. Regardless, detectives are continuing to investigate it fully to get a better understanding of exactly what happened, and crucially whether he became trapped in the freezer — and died from the cold.

Sadly, this is far from the first time that an employee has died in a walk-in freezer at a place that serves and sells food. As you may recall, last May, we covered the tragic tale of an Arby’s restaurant employee in the city of New Iberia, Louisiana who froze to death after becoming stuck in a walk-in freezer inside that fast food establishment.

In this case, as in that one, we send our strongest condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the employee who died in that Food Lion freezer. Just a terrible tragedy all around.
